Dubai: People who swim at night are responsible for their own safety, a senior police official said.

Major Abdullah Al Mazyood, Deputy Director of Ports Police Station, said there were no lifeguards after 10pm and whoever decides to swim at night does so as their own risk.

"We warn people against swimming at night, unless they are good swimmers and can handle any difficult situation," he said.

Major Al Mazyood said there had been three near-drownings at night over the last few days.

"Crowds in the sea can be dangerous, as they entice people who cannot swim into the water and if they are having difficulties, it is hard to spot them," he said.

Major Al Mazyood said there had been deaths as a result of crowds, especially on weekends. He said police will also fine speeding motorists driving too close to the shore, as this has resulted in deaths in the past.

Captain Khalifa Al Barq, Head of Dubai Police's Sea Rescue Section, said it was not illegal for people to swim in the sea at night, but there were safety instructions they needed to follow.

"People should not swim at night because if they need help, nobody will be able to see them," he said.

In 2005, the Sea Rescue Section reported four drownings while in the first six months of this year, there have been two drownings.
