Abu Dhabi: Fashion Arabia Expo, a three-day exhibition opened its doors to the public on Monday at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (Adnec).
The exhibition has retail stands as well as runway shows featuring local, regional and international designers.
Inaugurated by Shaikha Shamma Bint Zayed Al Nahyan, the exhibition saw hundreds of people browsing stands which offered a wide variety of goods for retailers, wholesalers and the public.
"We were surprised by the number of people who had attended our first day. We've had some serious buyers, such as Harvey Nicks KSA, expressing interest in what was showcased at the exhibition," Christopher Hudson, managing director, Mecom Forums, said.
Another feature that drew much attention was the discussion held by WGSM Trend company about what to expect from the fashion world, not only in upcoming seasons, but even a few years later.
That was then followed by the first fashion shows of the exhibition, beginning with designs by Emirati students from Shaikh Zayed Private Academy and Preston University Ajman, followed by catwalk shows by regional and international designers such as Sakina M'sa, Rami Al Ali, and Manish Malhotra.
"Many trade buyers enjoyed the combination of runways and exhibition, as it not only gave the event a European look, but it gave it a feel of being Middle Eastern and Asian, which made the exhibition refined to suit the market. If the numbers are any indication, we are very optimistic about the next two days of the exhibition," Hudson said.
Fashion Arabia Expo is running until Wednesday. Designers expecting to showcase their unique pieces include Kyri Kyriacou, who dresses stars such as Victoria Beckham and Keira Knightly, and Hassan Sheheryay Yasin, also known as HSY, who is credited with dressing many Bollywood stars.
