Dubai: Freediving demonstrations will literally take your breath away at the Dive Middle East Exhibition.
The skill of breath-hold diving has taken people to depths of 200 metres on a single breath, and for up to 9 minutes and one of the world's best freedivers will be in Dubai this week to display this extraordinary ability.
Emmar Farrell, one of the world's leading freediving instructors and one of only 10 Instructor Trainers in the world will be at Dive Middle East Exhibition (DMEX) to give talks and be available to teach a range of courses from beginner to instructor as well as giving breathing tips for scuba divers.
Key event
This is the first year DMEX is being run alongside the Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS) and will take place from today until March 17 at Dubai International Marine Club, Mina Seyahi. Farrell will give an introduction to freediving this evening at 7pm. She will give a demonstration with Dubai Ladies freediving Champion Sara Lise Haith tomorrow from 3pm.
The Emirates Diving Association (EDA) has teamed up with the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) to run the event alongside the boat show to provide a natural meeting point for divers and marine leisure enthusiasts.
From Red Sea resorts down to the Gulf coastal regions the Middle East is increasing in popularity as a destination for diving, attracting divers from around the world to its temperate waters and varied marine life.
Leading names from the world of dive equipment, supplies and services will be exhibiting the latest in scuba equipment.
Other demonstrations will feature new underwater cameras and advanced underwater communication technologies.
DMEX 2007 will also focus on current diving trends in the UAE. Part of the group's mandate in the region is to help promote responsible diving.
"Much of our history and tradition - as well as our future prosperity, is interlinked with the health of our oceans. We are confident DMEX will become a key event on the diving calendar, which will play a crucial role across the industry," said Eisa Al Ghurair, Vice-Chairman, Emirates Diving Association.
Sport can be compared to a martial art
Freediving is the sport of breath-hold diving in which the freediver descends under water on a single breath of air. Freediving includes leisure activities such as spearfishing and snorkelling as well as competitive disciplines: Constant Weight, Free Immersion, Variable Weight, No Limits, Dynamic and Static Apnea.
Freediving has many benefits and can be compared to a martial art. It promotes increased lung capacity, deeper levels of awareness and perception and control over one's body.
