Dubai: A full house greeted contestants on the second day of the seniors' teams Gulf News Blockbusters, with their cheers encouraging everyone to outsmart the other.
Pressing the buzzer on time does not necessarily mean that you a winning chance, and during the final of heat 5 on Friday, that proved to be the point.
As the final two teams battled it out on the playing board, the buzzer was pressed very quickly - so quick that team members did not have time to think of an answer. This strategy ultimately gave team Quizzards an advantage in winning heat 5 as they had more time to ponder over the question.
Nerves set in
The Quizzards team was made up of pupils studying in the 11th and 12th grade at the Indian High School: Chaithrasri Nirmalkumar, Pritesh Singh, Ashwin Menon and Arun Nair.
"I was very nervous when I could not answer questions because I had them on the tip of my tongue," said Singh, adding that his team would prepare harder for the quarter finals.
The final of heat 6 was a different kind of game as team members unfortunately fell into the habit of shouting out several different at once. One of the rules of Blockbusters is that the quizmaster can only accept the answer from the contestants whose buzzer is lit.
However, team members would press the buzzer, answer incorrectly, and then shout out several other answers as well.
Heat 6 was won by team Dickens Chickens, which was made up of 11th grade pupils studying at Our Own High School: Paritosh Gangaramani, Mohammad Anees, Kester Coutinho and Vishal Lakehinni.
"We played a similar quiz at school yesterday and the questions were a lot harder than what we were faced with. We carefully watched how the other teams chose their numbers on the board, and we picked up a few good points from them," said Anees.
