Al Ain/Abu Dhabi: Most residents said the law will help them with their budgets.

Nithim Shakhar, 36, Indian, said, "By knowing the increase rate, I won't get a shock when my landlord suddenly comes and tells me there's a 20 or 25 per cent increase. Now I will have time to plan ahead," he said.

Hilal Ra'ad, a 28-year-old manager from Lebanon, also said the move was a positive one. "I believe limiting the increase by seven per cent is much better than the 20 per cent increase we suddenly encounter by landlords. Now I will be prepared," he said.

Yousuf Abu Bakr, a retired UAE national engineer, said the move is good and timely. "The old law used to say 20 per cent increase, now the new law is much better but I think a large number of people are not paid well and will still suffer, even with the 7 per cent increase cap," he said.

Naseeb Shah, an expatriate from Al Ain, said the law would rescue many people who were at the mercy of landlords. "In some cases, I have seen landlords increase rents by more than 40 per cent," he said.

Mohammad Murad, another expatriate resident of Al Ain, called on the government to force private companies to provide decent housing for their employees.
