Dubai: Energy-efficient buildings could be the next marketing ploy for developers and a surefire way to keep Dubai at the forefront of technology, an architect and green-building enthusiast visiting from Miami has said.

Currently in Dubai to explore green possibilities in the UAE's construction sector, Chad Oppenheim, 36, creator of the Oppenheim Architecture + Design firm said environmentally-friendly architecture is the next level to reach in terms of construction.

"Dubai is a laboratory of architecture and society in the region. It has opened up so fast. The peace visible here has fostered growth of culture and design.

Miami was at the forefront of design but I think as Dubai always likes to be on the edge of development green architecture is the next level.

"Creating something special will always outweigh economic gain. This is the way things need to go," said Oppenheim, who has designed the first eco-building in Miami.

According to Oppenheim green buildings will themselves be used as product types and ways of promoting construction very soon in Dubai.

"At additional costs of maximum 10 per cent, and that's high, to create an energy-efficient building, you're going to get so much more on creating excitement. People are developers in Dubai so there is more of a chance of it happening faster. It is the future of architecture but doesn't sacrifice the aesthetic," he said.

Oppenheim has received numerous accolades for his work including 11 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Miami Design Awards.
