Abu Dhabi: The Shaikh Zayed Book Award encourages foreign writers, whose work has contributed to the Arab world's cultural development, to nominate themselves before October 15, said an official.
Rashid Al Orami, Secretary-General of the award, said in a press statement "the strategy of the award is to inform the international cultural community about the award by taking part in worldwide events as an Emirati initiative to build bridges with other cultures"
The award, valued at Dh7 million, is presented every year to outstanding Arab writers, intellectuals, publishers as well as young talent whose writings and translations of humanities have scholarly and objectively enriched Arab cultural, literary and social life. Foreign writers can nominate themselves in the categories of translation and the cultural personality of the year.
The award was established by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage in 2007 and is supervised by a committee that sets the general policies and a Consultative Council to follow up on its operational mechanisms.
Nine categories
The award covers nine categories in different fields of art and science.
Al Orami highlighted the international interest in the award. "We are in touch with major universities and institutions around the world that have specialised department in Islamic and Arabic studies in the US, England and France," he said.
