Abu Dhabi: For the first time, date pickles are being produced in the UAE. Some samples were displayed at the fifth Liwa Date Festival currently underway at Al Gharbia.
An Emirati farmer from Liwa stumbled on the idea after seeing fruit going to waste in the first stage of picking.
"When dates start growing, many are cut away to improve produce. I had always wanted to make use of the wasted green fruit; so I tried to pickle it and the result was excellent," Mohammad Suhail Al Mazroui , chairman of Liwa Centre for Dates, told Gulf News.
The spicy surprise however has still not made it to the market but with the date season coming to an end, Al Mazroui plans to launch it next year when the season starts.
Al Mazroui's facility was launched in 2006 in Liwa and his new project received support from the Khalifa Fund, which aids small and medium enterprises, in 2008.
"People of different nationalities seemed to like the taste of the pickle since it was least expected from a sweet fruit," he said.
