Why is the UAE now starting to capture the attention of the international art scene?

Firstly, the fast pace of development; also, because of the success of the Christie's auction last year, which really encouraged the art scene. The country's multicultural makeup has contributed to an increase in the number of good galleries, which has served to increase the awareness of people here.

What is needed to further develop art in the UAE?

More public spaces to show art are needed, but in general I think that the development of art is on the right track. The UAE has been active in the field for many years. Even if you look for example at the decoration of old houses and the architecture, at textiles, furniture, ceramics — artisans were here. Art has existed in one way or another since Dubai existed. In the '70s there was an art movement and the Emirates Fine Art Society, based in Sharjah, was established in 1980.

What needs to be done to nurture local talent?

More emphasis needs to be placed on good quality art education in schools. There are initiatives such as the Youth Art Studio, which focuses on teaching young UAE and the DCC works to expose young people to art as well.

Who are some of the most significant talents working in the UAE today?

Some of the main names are Abdul Qader Rais, who did very well at the Christie's auction where his work sold for over $250,000. Dr Najat Makki, a well-known female painter. Hassan Sherif, who is like a library of art and has given the next generation a very strong foundation. Also, Mohammad Kazem, Abdul Rahim Salem and Mohammad Yousuf.

How optimistic are you about the further development of the art scene?

Very. We are showing good art and challenging artists to work harder. Apart from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah are also very active in the field with museums and festivals. The first art college opened in Sharjah 5 years ago. If you go to Abu Dhabi soon you will see the Guggenheim and the Louvre, which is amazing.
