Dubai: A doctor on Thursday warned against fried-rice contamination, saying that it is common because of improper temperature control and storage and noted that at least 20 per cent of food poisoning cases are because of home-cooked food.

Giving an update to the staff of uniCare Medical Centre, Dr Anil Awatramani said it was imperative that people should practice good personal hygiene and run a clean kitchen. He said reheating food should be quick and at around 75 degree centigrade.

Fried-rice contamination comes from the bacteria Bacillus Cereus and the symptoms are rapid onset of vomiting, with or without diarrhea and abdominal cramps.

The doctor who also runs a travel medicine clinic said travelers could take about 500mg Ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic, but warned that it should be taken only as last resort and if there is no immediate medical help available.

Airline food is also a major cause of food poisoning, he said, and most travelers would be unaware where they got the infection from as the symptoms occur after 12 to 24 hours.
