- A customer came close to eating a cockroach after buying a sandwich from a bakery on Airport Road. Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority is taking legal action against the outlet.
Abu Dhabi: A bakery that served a cockroach-infested sandwich is being investigated by the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority.
"Our inspectors visited the bakery on Airport Road and found certain violations regarding cleanliness and hygiene," said said Mohammad Jalal Al Reyaysa, manager of communication at the Food Control Authority (ADFCA).
"We will refer the matter to court, which will decide the punishment in accordance with the law," he said.
Monitoring
"We ordered [the owners] to clean up the entire shop and utensils immediately. They cannot serve the food until it is done," added Al Reyaysa. "The inspectors will closely monitor the shop and if violations are found again, it will be closed down".
The filthy conditions at the bakery were highlighted when A.N., an Emirati woman, approached Gulf News to say that she had found a cockroach in a sandwich. The food was bought at her office and supplied from the bakery on Monday morning. "I found it after eating half of the sandwich and started to throw up."
She said she and her colleagues used to buy snacks from the bakery regularly. "When we reported it, they did not apologise. That's why we decided to approach Gulf News to bring the issue to the attention of authorities and public."
Gulf News referred the complaint to ADFCA which took immediate action.
Al Reyaysa praised A. N. for taking up the matter. He promised strict action against violators and explained that the violations found in the bakery were not serious enough for it to be closed down immediately.
A manager at the bakery denied that ADFCA was taking legal action against them and said he was not aware of the problem. But Al Reyaysa confirmed that the shop has been issued official notice as a part of the legal action. He added that if it does not adhere to the notice, it will be closed down.
The public is asked to report any food hygiene problems to ADFCA's toll free number: 800 6565 or email enquiries@adfca.ae.
