Civic body investigates food poisoning

Dubai: It is premature to comment on the case of two siblings who died in an incident of suspected food-poisoning after eating a take-away meal, unless the laboratory results are available, Dubai Municipality and Dubai Police said on Monday.
The municipality said that the matter is under investigation and the lab test results are expected today.
This is first case of suspected food poisoning reported in Dubai this year.
Random checks are carried out by the Dubai Municipality inspection team to ensure that food safety and hygiene standards are not being violated.
In a statement issued earlier to Gulf News on food safety, a municipality senior official said that inspections are carried out depending on the type and size of business.
On average there are around 200 inspections for small and medium size units while about five large units are checked per day. This does not include ports, warehouses and so on.
The official said that during inspection the team evaluates the food handler's practices, food storage, preparation, processing and serving of food. The inspectors also check for deficiencies in the physical plant (facilities) and pest-related violations.
He said that in summer certain food handling practices are closely checked. For example the temperature control of cold foods, dairy products and juices becomes difficult during summer.
There could be a rise in food temperatures during transportation and storage and this can result in multiplication of micro-organisms in the food.
