Dubai: His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Tuesday held talks with Gordon Brown, British Prime Minister, on bilateral relations, political situation and the regional and international economic issues.

Shaikh Mohammad welcomed Brown at a meeting held at Za'abeel Palace in the presence of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince, Shaikh Maktoum Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Deputy Ruler, Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Foreign Minister, other Shaikhs, ministers and high-ranking officials.

Commenting on the UAE visit, Brown said that it was a good chance to exchange views on political issues in the region and how to overcome obstacles in order to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East and Africa.

Shaikh Mohammad and Brown talked about the global financial crisis. Shaikh Mohammad underlined the importance of cooperation between the UAE financial and banking institutions with those of Britain.

He said there was a need for joint international efforts at government and private sector level to reach joint vision and set mechanisms to resuscitate the global economy, banking sector and world financial system.

The British Prime Minister said he was confident that “the UAE leadership is keen to help set a required balance in the world financial system'''.

The UAE was one of the first countries that started to back the national economy and protect the financial institutions, citing the injection of liquidity into the banking sector and financial market, he said. “This step ensured investors and wooed foreign investors into the country,'' Brown said.

He said the channels of cooperation, on the level of financial institutions, would remain open between the UAE and Britain.
