Abu Dhabi: The UAE will open its embassy in Switzerland soon to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries.

In an interview with Gulf News, Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz revealed about the plans saying, "The UAE announced the opening of an embassy in Switzerland during my official visit to the country, which I welcome very much."

"A decision was made to revise the final pending issues to conclude a double taxation agreement in accordance with the OECD Model Convention by the end of the year," he added.

OECD - Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development - is a group of countries sharing a commitment to a democratic government and market economy.

The OECD Model Convention deals with the question of relief from double taxation. Switzerland and UAE welcomed the developments in their bilateral relations, he pointed out.

"At the meeting I had with President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, we reiterated our readiness to intensify and strengthen our friendly, bilateral relations," the president said.

Along with those at the financial and economic levels, other areas of cooperation will include science, research, energy, the environment, culture, justice and politics, Merz added. In addition, the meeting with the UAE Finance Minister and the Governor of the Central Bank gave us an opportunity to discuss measures taken by both countries to combat the global financial and economic crisis and to promote mutual investments, he said.

The Swiss president recalled his previous experience in the region, saying, "I used to work in the Gulf 30 years ago and loved to be here very much."

It was the first official visit of a Swiss president to the UAE, Merz pointed out. "I've really enjoyed my visit in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, two dynamic and modern cities," he added.
