Stateless people must register, official says
People without documents to prove their identity who do not register will face strict action, a senior official said on Thursday.
Abu Dhabi: People without documents to prove their identity who do not register will face strict action, a senior official said on Thursday.
Following the two-month deadline given to people without documents to prove their identity for registration, intensive round-the-clock campaigns will begin to nab those who are found without identity cards, the Interior Ministry announced in a statement on Thursday.
Earlier this month the ministry announced a campaign for registration of people without documents to prove their identity in the country and four booths were set up.
Brigadier Nasser Al Awadi Al Minhali, Director General of Federal Naturalisation and Residency Department, said inspectors will crackdown on people found to be staying illegally in the country.
People without documents to prove their identity who do not make use of the registration period given by the government will be treated as illegal residents, he said.
At the booths, applicants are made to fill out detailed forms presenting their case on why they should be granted UAE nationality. Further, authorities study and investigate each application on a case by case basis and make the final decision after careful scrutiny.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) welcomed the UAE government decision to resolve the situation of people without documents to prove their identity, in press briefing in Geneva few days ago.
The commissioner added that the agency has recommended additional steps to address the problem and encourage a process that meets international standards.
The ministry has set up booths at Uptown Mall in Dubai, Noor Al Kawthar Mall in Ajman and Al Tawun Mall in Sharjah, to receive applications for registering people without documents to prove their identity.
