November 6 deadline set for citizenship registration
November 6 is deadline for receiving applications from stateless people who wish to register, and no application will be accepted after this deadline, warned the Ministry of Interior.
Abu Dhabi: November 6 is deadline for receiving applications from stateless people who wish to register, and no application will be accepted after this deadline, warned the Ministry of Interior.
Major General Nasser Al Nuaimi, Director of the Interior Minister's office, who has been assigned to solve the issue of the stateless people, said that sufficient time was allowed for every one to come forward and register, if they have no documents to prove their identity.
He said the government provided a real opportunity for all those who wanted to regularise their situation and live as law-abiding citizens while respecting the will of the society and the supremacy of law.
Al Nuaimi added that those who came forward to register their names have been granted temporary identity cards until their situations are regularised. After the closure of the registration, the concerned committee will hold coordinative meetings with all institutions in the public and private sectors asking them not to employ any person who does not carry identification documents.
Meanwhile, Brigadier Nasser Al Awadi, acting Director General of Naturalisation and Residency, said that the 51 persons who were granted the UAE citizenship by a presidential decree had a sincere desire to regularise their situations.
At the same time, some other applications were turned down due to poor evidence to substantiate their claims.
Earlier last month, the UNHCR spokesperson William Spindler hailed the two-month campaign launched by the Interior Ministry for the registration of stateless people and the establishment of four registration centres in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.
No application will be accepted from people who have no documents to prove their identity after the deadline.
