Dubai: A new initiative aimed at curing one million people of visual impairments has been launched on the personal initiative of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The initiative is called Noor Dubai, which means light in Arabic, with the long term objective of “a world free of blindness''.

The announcement was made by Shaikh Ahmad Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Events Management Corporation and follows on from the success of the Dubai Cares charity initiative.

Shaikh Ahmad, speaking on behalf of his father, said Noor Dubai was a gift from the UAE to their brothers and sisters in the world who are visually impaired.

The initiative aims to assist these people with medication and help in maintaining their vision.

It follows on from the success of Dubai Cares which targeted one million children, but ended up reaching more than four million.
