Abu Dhabi: The December 31 deadline for UAE citizens to register for the national identity cards will not be extended, a top official at the Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) said on Saturday.
Darwish Al Zarouni, Director-General of the EIDA, said the Cabinet decision was clear that Emiratis and professional expatriates must register for ID cards by the end of this year.
"All UAE nationals and professional expatriates should hold ID cards by the end of 2008, while expatriates of various categories should have them by the end of 2010," Al Zarouni said.
He said the authority will spare no effort to achieve its strategic target to set up a safe and accurate population register for five million UAE and expatriate residents by the end of 2010.
"The EIDA is about to finish the classification of expatriate residents into categories based on their occupations along with timetables for registration. This will enable them to register for their ID cards without confusion or delay," Al Zarouni clarified.
He expressed hope that the announcement of the timetables for expatriates' ID registration would enable the completion of the process within the specified timeframe.
Speech: 'Preserve identity'
Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of Foreign Trade, stressed the importance of preserving national identity in an address to graduate students of the 2006-07 batch of the Higher Colleges of Technology in Sharjah.
Shaikha Lubna said that the building of nations should be based on the elements of the present and protected by the eternal values of the past.
The youth can help preserve national identity, she added.
