Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Municipality was established in 1962 with just six employees. Its name was Department of Abu Dhabi Municipality and City Planning. Later it grew up with staff strength of 20,300 in 2005.

In the beginning its functions were limited to cleaning the streets, health safety, business licences.

Its functions were broadened when the first Municipal Council was appointed by an Emiri Decree in 1969.

The authority of the municipality was extended to larger areas such as all public services, city planning and designing, construction and maintenance of roads, street lights, subways and comprehensive projects for agriculture for the entire emirate.

Later the government system in the emirate was reorganized, and some government departments like Public works Department and Agricultural department in Al Ain were merged with Abu Dhabi Municipality.

It was named Department of Municipalities and Agriculture.

As part of a new vision Department of Municipalities and Agriculture was reorganized as Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) in May 2007. DMA regulates and coordinates the functioning of three municipalities in the emirate - Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and western region.

Following the reforms and restructuring commenced in 2006, Abu Dhabi Municipality now aims a staff target of 1801 down from 20,300, a little over two years ago.

Today, ADM is handling the unprecedented expansion of Abu Dhabi city by modernising its facilities, adopting latest technologies, streamlining its process and investing in human capital to improve overall service delivery.
