Expatriates in Dubai have thronged typing centres and Emirates ID registration offices to meet the May 31 registration deadline.

The Emirates Identity Authority said that since the introduction of the ID card people have preferred to wait until the last minute. Filling out the application at any of the more than 500 typing centres in Dubai before June 1 will avoid fines of Dh20 a day up to Dh1,000. Children under 15 have until October 1. Expatriates in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah whose residence visa expires this year can register when renewing.
