Khalifa launches national identity card project
President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan obtained his national identity card on Monday after registering with the population register.
Abu Dhabi: President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan obtained his national identity card on Monday after registering with the population register.
The move signalled the official launch of the ID card project, described as one of the largest high-tech projects in the Middle East.
All UAE nationals and expatriates will be able to apply for an ID card starting from 2007, said Dr Saeed Al Daheri, director-general of Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA).
The first phase of the registration for the Population Register and National ID Card programme covering army and public sector started in June 2005.
Shaikh Khalifa was briefed about the latest developments on the project by General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, WAM reported.
Shaikh Mohammad is also the chairman of the board of directors of EIDA.
Shaikh Mohammad presented the President with his ID card making him the first person in the country to receive one.
He also received a symbolic ID card made of gold-plated crystal as a gift from EIDA.
Shaikh Khalifa described it as one of the most important national projects.
"It constitutes not only one of the strategies of the state, but is also a qualitative leap. It will reinforce the development process of the country in the socio-economic, political and security spheres," he said.

Mobile system for registration
Dr Saeed Al Daheri, director general of EIDA, said President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan was registered using a mobile registration system designated for VIPs.
Shaikh Khalifa's data, including his photograph, fingerprint and e-signature were entered into the population register system.
Al Daheri said the VIP registration service will be provided to citizens or expatriates for a fee.
