Abu Dhabi: Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, witnessed the final joint military exercises of the UAE, Qatar and France in the UAE, as part of the "Gulf Shield 1" manoeuvres.

The joint war games are part of a wider cooperation between the three countries to share information and expertise.

Infantry, naval and air defence units participated in the war games, which lasted several days.

The ultimate aim of the drill was to unify training methods and boost combative preparedness of troops.

Lieutenant General Saeed Mohammad Khalaf Al Rumaithi, Deputy Armed Forces Chief of Staff, said the 'Gulf Shield 1' war games series have been running since 1996 with emphasis on planning, execution, and management of joint military operations, as provided for in the joint defence pact signed between the UAE and France in 1995.

Al Rumaithi also said the "Gulf Shield 1" is the first joint exercise to be organised by the UAE and France with the participation of Qatari troops.

The exercises comprised of central command training and field training exercises.

Reaching goals

The "Gulf Shield 1" manoeuvres successfully achieved their goals, along side the Qatari and French troops, reflecting high combat abilities and excellence in dealing with weapons and advanced techniques.

The success was achieved as a result of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan's wise directives and the UAE leadership's constant care and guidance.
