  • Residents in the Shaam area of Ras Al Khaimah work to create a record-breaking UAE flag, larger than the first which was set ablaze during an alleged dispute.

Ras Al Khaimah: Emiratis residing in the remote area of Shaam are working day and night to create a new giant UAE flag, even bigger than the one that caught fire a few days ago.

The new flag — created to mark UAE's 38th National Day — is 500 metres long and 20 metres wide and is expected to be the largest ever made.

Emiratis here said that the previous flag being destroyed motivated them to make an even larger one.

Money had to be collected yet again to buy the necessary materials required to make the flag.

They stressed that the celebrations of the UAE's National Day in Shaam will be different from the celebration in other emirates.

The new flag will be laid on a mountain with the help of police helicopters.

Piece by piece

Residents said that the giant flag has been prepared piece by piece — with pieces being painted during the day and sewn together at night. They said that hundreds of Emiratis have participated in the making of the flag.

They added that the celebrations gained additional media coverage after the first flag was set ablaze at the Ahmad Bin Majid Basic School. They said that nothing would stop them from marking the precious occasion of UAE's National Day in a manner which would surprise everyone.

The residents condemned the burning of the UAE flag and said that no reason can justify this criminal act.

Local residents have blamed a dispute with neighbours for the burning of the first flag. The incident has been reported to RAK Police, who have launched an investigation.

Have you begun preparing for the National Day? How do you plan to celebrate? Have you been able to make friends from different nationalities and cultures while living in the UAE?
