UAE wins support for IPU executive seat
The UAE has been unanimously recommended by Arab parliaments to membership of the executive committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Cairo: The UAE has been unanimously recommended by Arab parliaments to membership of the executive committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The UAE has also been recommended by member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to membership of the political and economic committee at the Parliamentary Union of the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) Member states (PUOICM) which held its fifth conference yesterday in Cairo.
Recommendations were made during consultations in Cairo by the Arab group of PUOICM.
Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC) Abdul Aziz Abdullah Al Ghurair told WAM the Gulf countries have concerted positions on a number of issues on the agenda of PUOICM conference.
Gulf parliamentary bodies back the UAE on the issue of the Iranian occupation of the three UAE islands, Tunbs and Abu Mousa, occupied by Iran, said Al Ghurair.
The UAE seeks support from other Arab and Muslim states on the issue, he said.
Fighting terrorism
The conference will also discuss the current situation in Iraq, Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Darfur, Somalia, Kashmir as well as fighting terrorism under the umbrella of the United Nations.
The 48-member PUOICM was set up in 1999 and is based in Tehran.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is the international organisation of parliaments of sovereign states. It was established in 1889 to be the first permanent forum for political multilateral negotiations.
The union is the focal point for worldwide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and cooperation among peoples and for the firm establishment of representative democracy.
Addressing the participating delegates, Al Ghurair said the communiqué should call for Iran to respond positively to the UAE's demands for solving the issue through peaceful means or referring it to
the International Court of Justice.
Al Ghurair is leading the UAE delegation, which includes a number of members of FNC.
