Hamdan cites trailblazing initiatives
Abu Dhabi: Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Western Region, said the UAE was transformed into a modern state that occupies a leading position at the regional and international levels and enjoys the respect of the international community for its achievements.
In a statement marking National Day, Shaikh Hamdan said: "The UAE has undergone substantial transformations in line with the clear vision of the wise leadership of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
In his capacity as Chairman of the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi, Shaikh Hamdan outlined the great achievements in the field of environmental establishments and national legislations governing them as well as the strategies to sustain natural resources and curb pollution.
The UAE has set legislations and rules to preserve marine life, biologic ecosystem, quality of air, management of chemical materials and hazardous waste and encourage clean production methods as well as using environment-friendly technology and setting up natural reserves.
Sustainable development
Shaikh Hamdan said the agency exerted efforts to protect the environment, among which was adopting the sustainable building principle and clean development in project implementation, as well as encouraging sustainable use of resources and renewable energies.
The agency also set programmes to protect endangered species such as tortoise, bustards and Oryx.
It also conducted studies on developing water resources and ways to preserve water, as well as setting a unified code for water and sewage installations.
He stressed the importance of environmental awareness in the field of rationalisation of energy and water consumption through oriented programmes and media outlets.
