Abu Dhabi: The end of years of civil war has gained Sri Lankans their true freedom, expatriates told Gulf News on Thursday, as they celebrated their 62nd Independence Day.

It was the first Independence Day celebration after the Lankan government's victory over the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, commonly known as the Tamil Tigers), about nine months ago. Community members gathered at the embassy, dressed in traditional clothes.

The hoisting of the national flag by Asoka Girihagama, acting Sri Lankan Ambassador, was followed by the National Anthem sung by a group of schoolchildren.

"After 30 years of terrorism, now is when the country has gained real freedom... we need to unite for the development of the country", Girihagama told Gulf News.

He also urged expatriates to support the nation by investing back home and by lending their expertise in various sectors.

Community members observed two minutes of silence in remembrance of their national heroes, who sacrificed their lives for the country. Messages from Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa were read out where he called the day a "historic and significant celebration of freedom".
