Dubai: Winners of the 10th Shaikh Rashid Awards for Humanitarian Studies were honoured in a lavish ceremony Thursday at the Emirates Towers.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and attended by Shaikh Juma Bin Maktoum Bin Juma Al Maktoum.

The awards were organised by the Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre with the coordination of Al Mandoos Media Establishment to honour the scientific research of an academic in the field of special needs.

This year's awards included two additional categories: rewarding the media for their positive role in raising awareness about the challenges and achievements of those with special needs; and rewarding institutions for their role in offering rehabilitation and job opportunities for people with special needs.

Rohi Murowah Obaidat, a leading researcher in the field of special needs and a member of the special needs department at the Ministry of Social Affairs, was among those honoured. His research focused on the effectiveness of the rehabilitation programmes offered in the UAE.

The second award was given to the Interior Ministry for its proactive role in rehabilitating and assisting individuals with various disabilities.

The third award was distributed to a number of media organisations in the UAE, including Sama Dubai TV, Al Khaleej newspaper, Noor Dubai radio station, and Al Sada magazine for their role in raising different issues about people with various disabilities.

According to Ahmad Hashim Khouri, founder of the Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre, the awards will include a new category for the 11th edition to recognise the role of women in highlighting and offering services for people with special needs.

"The centre is also in the process of establishing an information centre on special needs and to provide studies and projects for scholars. We want to encourage more research and studies," he said during the ceremony.
