Sharjah hikes illegal dumping fine
The municipality is cracking down hard on illegal dumping in the emirate and has now imposed a Dh100,000 fine on people found flouting the rules.
Sharjah: The municipality is cracking down hard on illegal dumping in the emirate and has now imposed a Dh100,000 fine on people found flouting the rules.
"There have been many incidents where companies were dumping waste illegally in the city and in deserted areas that created a hazard to the environment as well as to residents' health,' said Mohammad Al Ka'abi, head of security section at Sharjah Municipality.
The fine was imposed several days ago and is applicable to residents and companies who are found dumping material and liquid waste.
It used to be a common sight within the industrial areas to see sewage water and construction rubble lying between developing buildings and in the inner-city alleys, which caused a nuisance to residents who had to live next to the stench.
"It is now mandatory to dispose liquid and solid waste in a designated location at Al Saja'a Industrial Area," he said.
Construction companies are now required to transport their building materials, such as wood, concrete and metal, at the construction recycling plant at Al Saja'a Industrial Area.
The recycling plant currently manages up to 4,000 tonnes of waste a day and recycles the materials which are then sold at a third of the original price.

I appreciate this move. Many companies throw their waste on roads and streets. This is hazardous for everyone.

It is a good step taken by authorities. I think they should impose heavy fines on people who litter. I stay in a place where you will find pieces of glass bottles, chocolate wrappers, plastic covers and all kinds of waste. Garbage bins are right there. Why cant people make use of them?
