Sharjah: The power crisis that hit many Sharjah districts two weeks ago was by Monday confined to just two industrial areas.

Residents in industrial areas 17 and 13 experienced another day without electricity and had to continue fasting in the heat.

However, an official with the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) said that engineers were presently carrying out maintenance work to replace components that had broken down at the main power production plant, due to a system overload.

“It seems like the authorities forget that families are also living in the industrial areas and it is not only filled with workshops. It is getting very difficult for my children who are fasting, because the heat is unbearable,'' said Mohammad Anwar, a resident of one of the affected areas.

“My husband called Sewa many times to get some advice as to what to do and to ask when the power will get connected to our apartment.
Shocked

“After many times of calling, someone finally answered and we were shocked when they told us to go and buy a generator.

“This is not the sort of response we were looking for and the authorities need to be more active in this sort of situation,'' said Nadia S.

Most residents have been forced to buy food on a daily basis.

“It will be my son's birthday on Friday and I cannot invite his friends because we do not have any power and the heat is unbearable. It is very difficult to buy food on a daily basis and it is getting very difficult and tiring to do this every day,'' one resident of Industrial Area 17 said.

While some areas in Sharjah continued to suffer for a straight second week without electricity, other neighbourhoods were only starting to recover.

Buildings in Industrial Areas 1 and 12, in addition to Al Nahda, had their power supplies restored on Sunday night.

A senior Sewa official said that the industrial areas were currently connected to emergency power reserve supplies, which were being rationed among the affected areas. “Once one of the industrial areas has their electricity back, we stop it from using the emergency reserve.

“We will then use the reserve to power another area until all are connected,'' he said, stressing that electricity has been returned to 90 per cent of the city.

Have you been affected by the power outages? If yes, how are you managing your daily activities? Are you considering buying a generator for your home?

It is not Just Two Industrial areas; Industrial area 3 is also still affected by the power cut. The SEWA should at least inform about the timings of power cut. And it is not fair to make residents in industrial area alone to suffer. Why only one area has to suffer the power loss every time? Why don't they distribute alternately to other areas, so that daily sufferers may get some relief? At least SEWA should inform us how long it will continue. SEWA has no right to charge any service charges, if they are not able to manage the problem.

Dear Louie Tedesco, Do you have small kids? You have no idea what others have been going through in the last couple of days. Life like the past is nice to experience but not every now and then. I note from your signature that you live in Dubai and must be typing from your home where you have electricity and AC.

More than the power situation in Sharjah is the attitude of the power that be that is such a farce. Calls to the emergency number are never answered and one suspects that the receiver is kept off the hook. Calls to SEWA do not elicit any useful answer. Technical problems are unseen, given, but what is stopping the authority from giving the relevant information such that the residents may plan forward. There is a total disconnect between the authority and the populace and this can be seen in the way the infrastructure timelines are managed.

It is a basic requirment SEWA should inform the public about the full picture. The public then will help in reduce power consumption, adjust their routine during the outage time.

I am staying in Industrial Area-3 and everyday elecricity plays hide and seek with us. It's nice to have such a palying and even it's really fun not to sleep properly and sit ideal in the night and chat. In the morning everybody has to go office so we dont sleep whole night. And it's amazing to see that such a fast and modern city is taking just 2-3 weeks to restore all the problems. Really nice developement and good work from sewa. Keep it up

In response to reader Louie T, we DO NOT fast to feel suffering of poor people. Do you even know anything about Islam or Ramadan? Please do not make assumption on matters you do not know about. People. Why would we want to deal with power outages here. SEWA should inform residents of the length of outages, some information is always better than being left out in the dark.

I am a residence of Industrial area 7 we have been effected by power cut since 15 days. now daily 12 hours from 2 pm to 1 am. we call up 991 nobody answer and if they answer they give false detail. like if we ask when the electircity will come ofhand they will say 5 pm and the electircity comes around 1 am it is really frustrating when we don't get proper reply. we need to know uptill what date thing will get normal. the answer may be tomorrow may be 2 day may be 4 day and so on. but unlike other tomorrow never comes. our children going to school and we have to keep every things ready for the next day. some time we spend hours in the car in the parking area waiting for the light to come. please if any body knows when the thing will get back to normal please feel free to tell us

Residents should not complain but instead see the power shortage as another contribution to the true spirit of Ramadan. Why do we fast during the day? It is to feel the hunger and suffering that the poor feel every day and every night in many areas around the world. Why do you complain about having to walk up flights of stairs? Think about those who have lost limbs and cannot walk at all, or those who live in huts with not even a door. My home country also gets very hot and humid in the summertime. Air conditioning there is a luxury that only the very rich people have in their car, home or office. It isn't that long ago when this region had no a/c at all, and people survived even while out in the midday sun! Thank you SEWA for bringing the past back to life so that we can understand the hardships that were endured here by our predecessors.

I am very much affected by this untimely and unscheduled every day continuous power outage.SEWA official not giving any clear answer while calling 991 to plan our days. Many families are living in the industrial area with school going children.I have two school going kids and very difficult for them to manage while power outage time. Now am afraid this will affect their education and health during this holy Ramadan time.We feel very discriminated.Am an electrical engineer and i know it is not a viable/advisable solution to buy a generator and connect to the individual flat in the building because of safety reason. But can be possible by connecting entire building to a standby generator. It has to be done by land lord with prior permit from SEWA. This time am considering to change the current accommodation into an unaffected area. This case i want to know any clause mention in the tenancy contract conditions for premature termination off my tenancy contract with the owner of the building. Due to daily and continuous power outage my rented family flat is now not eligible to live and it is a dead flat while power outage. Now I am completed 3 months of my 1 year contract three post dated rent payment check balance with land lord,I need to recover this from the owner. Please advise for the changing the flat in this situation as per sharjah municipality regulation/consumer protection right.

I am living in Al-Nahda, Sharjah. Since last two days we are facing power failure for 2 to 5 hours at night. I would like to know what are the reasons behind it. Is really that what the officials are giving into news or something else. Last year since August 08 to March 09 they did not give electricity connection to any new building then why they start it from April 09. Are they have new Supply units in April or just they put Extra Energy load by themselves. If they want to put some loadshading then please give exact timming.

And its not fair to make residents in industrial area alone to suffer. If SEWA plans properly and shuts the current in all parts sharjah for 1hr each, i guess the problem will be sloved. Rather than making only industrial area to suffer.we suffer 8-10hrs a day without the current. Cant all parts of sharjah share 1hr each?

Now from last 2 days it is like power cut and at least 2 times daily the power is going off for 3-4 hrs. Writing in the capacity as a Sr Ctzn, A retired Power Station Engineer, Electrical Graduate. My comments: 1. Encourage people to use solar panels in small capacity to satisfy domestic needs like one fan,one pc ,one light, solar chargeable batteries ,fans etc. this is the right opportunity to introduce this as it is nonpolluted item. For solving cable fault problems you can take help from India also as Power Statin Electrical Engineers face such situation many times. Thanks for reading my comments.

After several calls to SEWA, finally a customer service representative picks up the line. The response from them was horrible, she says that nobody in SEWA has any idea when the power would be restored, when asked what we residents are supposed to do? She says ?go stay with some friends in Dubai? or else buy a generator. This is not the kind of reply we expect from an established company like SEWA, they are here to provide us service and why don?t we residents get at least correct information despite of paying service charges and other charges?

People should finally sit up and notice the power they are consuming. I am amazed that the owners of shops still haven't realised the crisis and waste electricity by having 5-10 tubes switched ON at their entrances. If SEWA is indeed facing power shortage they should ask shop owners in the emirate to switch OFF all the decoration lights till the issues are sorted out. I feel for all industrial area residents who must be gutted at SEWA's attitude and find nobody to take up their plight with the authorities.

We are living in industrial Area 3 till now suffering without electricity. This problem started on 10th August and till now we are facing the same electricity problem. No electricity is resorted in our area. Caterpillar traffic signal will be off everyday. We cannot take left or right. Keeping fast it is horrible to stay without electricity. Whenever we call SEWA their line will be either busy or they will not take our call. On daily basis we have to purchase for iftar. Most of the buildings in Sharjah industrial area don't have generators. There should be a rule that every building should have their own generators. Many of them from our building has vacated we do plan the same before that we need to think our financial position. This is the fourth week the electricity cut off problem still going we need that SEWA should advice us when this problem will be sort out or they have to give us notice to vacate the premises if this continue for long the time and also should not approve any others residential building projects as they cannot give electricity. We are fed up. One person from SEWA has to live our life without electricity while keeping fasting they will feel what a pain we are feeling. Please give us reply for our queries or give the exact date when this problem will be solved.

My child is not able to attend school because she is not having proper sleep as the power comes back at around 11.30pm. Our life is totally disturbed due to this power crisis. We have spoken to our landlord regarding generator to be installed which he is kind enough to consider the same but again he is facing problem as SEWA authorities are not giving approval for the same. I am really surprised as to why SEWA is acting like this.

At least SEWA should inform us how long it will continue. Reason being my family is suffering lot of problems because of this power failure. We really don?t know what to do with my children who is going to school. Nowadays continuously 8 hours no electricity that also in this hot season. And small child which is only 9 months keep crying whole night. Requesting authority to do some immediate action to rectify this problem.

I have been to UK in holydays. what I have seen there that in Leicester city there was a power failure in one of the area for 8 hours. the authority in UK have paid compensation to all residents in that area. people have never asked authority for the same still they have paid to them. see how SEWA is behaving. they are telling people to buy generators. that also in holy month of Ramadan. so inhuman.

This electricity fluctuation become permanent in Ind # 7 from 14.00 to 17.00 then 20:00 to 23:59 , there is no improvement from 2 weeks at all. In this Holy month of Ramadan we got great gift from SEWA - "Total black out".

SEWA should give a proper explanation of what is going on for so many days? The inconsistent power supply is frustrating as the heat is still unbearable and kids are unable to sleep at night. Why is permission granted for high rise towers when proper infrastructure is not in place? It is horrible for people to have to walk up 30 floors because of no electricity.
