Sharjah: Scores of buildings on Jamal Abdul Nasser Street in Sharjah were affected on Sunday as taps went completely dry for most of the day.

Shop keepers and tenants were both affected by the water shortage in the Al Qassimia district, which also hit several parts of Al Majaz.

"My restaurant did not have any water since Saturday night and we did not have any throughout the day. I managed to keep business running by using water bottles that were already stored for cases of emergency like this one," said an employee at Radio Restaurant.

Several other restaurants in the area also reported of a water shortage.

Residents said they did not receive any warning from the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa), and that it disrupted their day activities.

"We had a flood last week and now we don't have any water. How can there be a shortage? I had very little water coming out from the taps, and it was almost impossible to do anything with it," said Esiam Hassan, a father of three.

"I had to wake up at 5am and find that I did not have any water. I ended up washing with bottled water because there was nothing else to do," said Mohammad Arshad.

Abdul Jabbar Khorshed, from Bangladesh, said that his children could not make it to school on time because they were unable to buy bottled water.

"The 5-gallon bottles ran out and I had to buy the smaller ones of one litre. It was a disaster trying to get them ready for school."

An engineer at Sewa said that that the water shortage was caused by a defect that occurred at the main plant of water distribution in Al Layyeh, which supplied water to Al Qassimia area and several parts of Al Majaz.

He assured that the water will be supplied to the affected buildings in the evening.

Residents said water supply returned late in the evening.
