Sharjah: Residents who do not renew their tenancy contracts on time may be subjected to a fine in the future, a municipality official said on Monday.

“Authorities at the municipality are discussing the possibility of implementing a fine if tenancy contracts are not renewed on time. But until now, the rule remains the same and tenants will not be fined,'' said Abdullah Al Shwaikh, a Sharjah Municipality spokesman, despite residents claiming they were issued a late payment fee of Dh20 for every late month.

Nevertheless, tenants are urged to renew their tenancy contracts with the municipality to avoid confrontation. This is vital because tenants will then be within their rights to register a complaint with the Rent Dispute Arbitration Committee.

Where to go: Branch offices

Tenants are able to register their tenancy contracts with Sharjah Municipality at the five following municipality branches:

  • Al Qassimia & Al Nasseriya
  • Al Majaz & Al Khalidiya
  • Al Merraija

Timings: from 7.30am-2pm on weekdays and from 8am-12pm on Saturday.
