RAK's fishing industry to undergo emiratisation
From March 1 only Emiratis will be allowed to sell, trade and hold auctions at fish markets following a decision by the local government to emiratise the business.

Ras Al Khaimah: From March 1 only Emiratis will be allowed to sell, trade and hold auctions at fish markets following a decision by the local government to emiratise the business.
Shaikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ras Al Khaimah Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler, has issued a decision to organise the fishing profession and emiratise the field.
The Crown Prince's decision limits trade in the fishing business to UAE nationals. However, other nationalities will be allowed to give a helping hand with the cleaning up of the fish in the fish markets.
According to the decision, only Emiratis will be allowed to engage in trade at the emirate's fish markets.
The decision commissioned the Municipality's General Manager to set up a sub-committee comprising members of the Fishermen's Association. The decision added the new sub-committee will be in charge of the official appointment of Emirati fish traders.
It calls on the new fishing sub-committee to monitor the performance of the emirate's fishing markets and the fishing business in general to ensure that only Emiratis are involved in it.
Grace period
It stressed that the sub-committee will be responsible for registering and reporting all violations to the emirate's Municipality and that these offences will be dealt with seriously.
A senior government official said effective from the beginning of March the Asian presence in the emirate's fish markets would disappear. He added Emirati fishermen and fish traders were gearing up to take over.
He said the time starting from now until the beginning of March was a grace period for Asian fish traders to wind up their businesses in the emirate.
The official stressed that the decision was meant to root out Asian domination in this vital business.
National fishermen have been urging their local government to take such a decision for a long time to give them the chance to benefit from this flourishing business.
The decision stated that it was inspired by Federal Law No. 23 (1999) the emirate's Municipal Law for 1981, the decision of the UAE Cabinet No. 462/5 for 2005 and the decision of the UAE Municipalities General Secretary No. 4/1/66/2005.
