Dubai: Sunyi is a nanny who means the world to her family.

Raja Al Gurg is a board member of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry whose contribution to the city is invaluable.

Emma Lauren is a Briton who converted to Islam and is the bridge for peace communication between the East and West.

Roberta Rees, a breast cancer survivor, has touched many lives.

All these women have one thing in common. They are all residents of the UAE who have contributed to our society in some way. And now, award-winning Australian photographer Charney Magri has captured the essence of each of these women in her upcoming photo-book Women of the UAE.

Featuring the stories of 80 women, the 192-page glossy is Charney's attempt to pay tribute to the rich cultural mix of women who call the UAE home.

"The beauty of this book is that it's about all women, not just one type of woman, from one country, or one career or social group. It's a book to show the different faces of womanhood in the UAE."

When Magri first came up with the idea of the book, she was still relatively new to Dubai and fresh from a fashion and beauty background. "All my life I've been surrounded by women. Working with fashion magazines in England, everyone around me was a woman. When I left for Africa, I was overwhelmed by the beauty of Kenyan and Tanzanian women. When my husband and I moved to Dubai in 2008, it was only natural that I did something connected to the women in this country."

And right there was born the idea of a book. "In August 2010, I created a website and opened registrations, asking women from the UAE to nominate themselves or other woman they felt deserved to be honoured," says Magri.

The nominations flooded in by the hundreds. Soon it was time to narrow down the list to just over 100 women. From a five-month-old baby to a 90-year-old woman, Women of the UAE features women from all walks of life and from various nationalities, ranging from French to British, African, Italian, Indian, Canadian, Filipino, Swedish, Iraqi and more.

Scheduled for a March 8 release, Women in UAE will be available at all major bookstores for Dh275.
