Dubai: Majority of the Pakistani community members in the UAE hope that the political and economic crises in the country will be over with the resignation of President Pervez Musharraf.
They believe that the coalition partners should now concentrate on improving the plight of people who are suffering because of sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities, and deteriorating law and order.
People here also called one another and sent text messages showing their happiness upon President Musharraf's exit.
Many also distributed sweets to celebrate what they called a ‘victory of democracy.'
Gulf News spoke to Pakistani expatriates living in the UAE to get their comments on the issue.
Riaz Farooq, the president of the Pakistan Association in Dubai, said that President Musharraf should be tried in court so that no dictator ever dares take over power in the country in future. He should not be given ‘safe passage' at any cost.
The leader of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in Dubai, Sardar Javed Yaqoob, said that it was a day of victory for Pakistani people who love democracy. “His resignation will help strengthen democratic forces and will bring prosperity in the country. “
Javed Malik, Dubai based Pakistan Ambassador at Large, said that August 18 will be remembered as historic day in the history of Pakistan because it is the day when democracy defeated dictatorship. “It is the defining moment and will help shape the future of Pakistan on the road to prosperity,'' he added.
Chaudhry Noorul Hassan Tanveer, a leader of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) in Dubai, said that Musharraf's resignation is not less than a miracle. “He should be held accountable for all his deed which led to political and economic crises in the country,'' he said.
The president of PML-N in the UAE, Chaudhry Mohammad Altaf concurred, saying that Musharraf's resignation is the victory of people of Pakistan. “Now the coalition government should reach consensus to choose an undisputed personality to be the new president,'' he said.
Rahid Chaugtai, a PPP leader in Dubai, said: “Our leader the late Benazir Bhutto sacrificed her life to restore real democracy in the country and today her goal is achieved.
I must say that Musharraf should be brought to justice.''
Another PPP leader in Dubai, Zahoor Shujra, said that President Musharraf's resignation would open new avenues of development in the country. “Politicians should also get united to bring the country out of the current economic crisis and give relief to general public,'' he said.
Azad Ali Tabbassam, a prominent community member in Sharjah, believed that democratic forces and people of Pakistan have finally won. “We are happy to get rid of dictator,'' he added.

It's a kind of a dual feeling, happiness as well as sorrow. Whatever is done is done, but bottom line is that whoever is ruling pakistan should make sure that the condition in pakistan should improve in all aspects.
