The Oman government is actively pursuing an e-governance strategy to provide online access to government information and services. In order to push forward the country's e-business and e-government initiatives, two conferences were recently organised in Muscat.

The Future is Calling and E-Government in Action conferences were held at Muscat's Crowne Plaza Hotel. An exhibition highlighting the latest technological services and solutions was also organised on the sidelines.

Oman Telecommunications Company, Oman TradaNet, the country's first provider of a digital e-commerce exchange, Nortel Networks, Belden Wire & Cable, Sun Microsystems, Eircom, Cisco Systems, among others, were some of the prominent participants in the show.

The e-government conference featured experts such as Doug Forbes of Barcony Consulting group, UK, responsible for setting up the UK's first e-government portal; Mervyn Foster of Manson Consultancy, UK, who spoke on a technology road map for e-government; and Craig Blakely of the Alliance Law Group, USA, who presented successful e-government projects from the U.S.

"Markets don't move unless people understand technology," Dominick Keenaghan, President of Insights, the show organisers, told Gulf News. The Future is Calling conference was held for the second time in Muscat. The first show in 1999 was a success and prompted the establishment of a number of call centres in the Sultanate. It also led to the increasing importance of Customer Relationship Management.
