Dubai: After extensive deliberations, countries taking part in a labour conference in Abu Dhabi submitted a draft list of recommendations on Tuesday, which is expected to be approved during a meeting in the evening.
Brunson McKinley, General Director of International Organisation of Migration, said he is hopeful that the draft will be adopted by the members.
“This draft is only the beginning of a long process. Don't fail to realise that what's happening today is very important. This is the first time on a multilateral basis that countries, both labour receiving and sending, have come to sit at the same table. There have been many disagreements in the past. Today they are agreeing on the fact that changes need to be made,'' McKinley said.
The resolution, according to sources, is seeking ways to enhance knowledge of labour trends, understand remittances between labour sending and receiving countries, labour demand and supply, prevent illegal recruitment, exploitation of workers and develop a comprehensive approach in managing the entire cycle of temporary workers.
