Lighting up in non-smoking area could cost you Dh500
People lighting a cigarette in the non-smoking area will be fined Dh500 from January next year, said a senior official.
- Fnes for violating smoking ban in shopping centres, restaurants and coffee shops in Dubai will come into effect from January, 2008.

Sounds good, but the government should also make sure that they put up no-smoking signs in the places where smoking is restricted before they start penalising the public.

I would be nice if the government can designate areas for smokers even in no-smoking zones. Ever since the ban on smoking I have never stepped into a cafe in a mall. Before that, I used to visit them daily.

The Dubai government has taken the right decision. We want a permanent ban on smoking in the UAE.

This scheme has been tried before but the ban was lifted. I don't think this scheme will work for very long. Obviously, most of the customers in coffee shops and restaurants are smokers.

The ban is good news. It should also be extended to bus stops, film theatres and beaches.

I appreciate the strict measures taken and hope that the rules are imposed and executed very strictly. I feel this will also give the smokers a reason to try and quit the habit.

This is a really nice decision. It will also save non-smokers from passive smoking. I think this should be considered the first step towards boycotting socially all those who smoke in public places.

I hope these rules will be implemented well. Is it possible to impose such rules in private offices? It really kills all of us who are non-smokers.
