Dubai: A Dh90 light bulb masquerading as a traditional bulb from the 1880s is looking for a bright future in Dubai.
Segula bulbs have the same design and warm yellow glow of the early bulbs, but use tiny LEDs. Instead of a filament wire, the bulb holds 40-80 LEDs on a card-like component.
"It's a nostalgic, retrofitted bulb using modern technology. People still love the basic shape and glow of the 150-year-old incandescent bulb, we don't need to reinvent the wheel," Segula managing director Niall Murray said.
"Other bulbs, like fluorescent lights, make your skin look ugly, food look ugly. They are very ‘cold' and your eyes get tired."
He added that regular LED bulbs usually have "unappealing" shapes, need special sockets, and are made of plastic, not glass, which means they cannot be used in extreme weather. "But with glass LED bulbs, 50C or -40C is no problem," Murray said.
The Segula bulbs cost about €19 (Dh91) each and shine with 100 per cent brightness for about two years, he added.
The German brand, which is participating in the Middle East Electricity event at Dubai International Exhibition Centre till February 9, is looking for a UAE dealer.
