Dubai: Cycling and jogging tracks will be provided along the city's major roads as part of road landscaping projects by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said a senior official.

The RTA will spend Dh170 million this year on 45 landscaping projects along Dubai's roads including intersections and interchanges. "The landscaping projects not only aim at the beautification of roads but also contribute to enhancing green areas in the city, in addition to controlling ... pollution," said Maitha Obaid Bin Udai, Chief Executive Officer of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA.

Dubai Municipality plans to achieve eight per cent of greenery in the city by 2012, which has been affected by the massive cutting of trees due to road expansion works.

"Due to the massive damage to greenery, the municipality has to extend its target of achieving eight per cent greenery of the total urban area in the emirate from 2012 to 2020," an official said earlier this month.

Responding to a question regarding the felling of trees on the roads, Rashed Abdullah Al Falasi, Manager of the Landscape Section at the RTA said that many of the trees especially the date palm and the Ghaf trees have been saved and would be replanted once the roadwork is completed. "We have to cut trees to expand roads but we will make up for the lost greenery," he said.

Nabeel Mohammad Saleh, Director of Roads at the RTA said, "We will not only plant trees ... but also provide tracks for jogging, cycling and recreational areas on different roads."
