Ras Al Khaimah: Emiratis from the Al Rams area raised Dh350,000 to build a mosque in Jordan which will be named after Nasser Al Tunaiji, who sacrificed his life to save his two sons at sea.
Coordinators of the donation campaign said donors from across the UAE have contributed to the charitable project that is in memory of Nasser who has been named the 'Al Rams martyr'.
Coordinators said the area of Al Rams was saddened by the loss of one of its noble children [Nasser] who was known all over the emirate for his ideals and respectable code of conduct.
A delegation comprising coordinators for the project recently visited Jordan, where a charitable Jordanian man donated a plot of land to build the mosque which will be large enough to accommodate hundreds of people.
Major Nasser Ahmad Al Tunaiji, a 34-year-old lost his life to save his two sons on March 22. Nasser accompanied his children to the sea over the weekend and was shocked to find his two sons, 10-year-old Sultan and 8-year-old Ali fighting the high waves.
Helping hand
The father rushed to save them. He carried his two sons on his shoulders swimming to the shore when he was given a helping hand from two Emiratis who carried his children.
Nasser got extremely exhausted and could not swim to shore but the Emiratis who helped his children said they saw him a few seconds before he sank into the sea and that he did not disappear until he made sure his two sons reached the shore safely.
The two Emiratis returned to the sea to help the father but never found him and reported the case to the police who recovered his dead body.
At the time Nasser died, his wife was eight months pregnant. Ahmad Al Tunaiji, Nasser's father said that the family has now been blessed with his newborn son whom they have named Nasser.
