Abu Dhabi: The Indian community in the UAE late on Monday came out strongly to condemn the terror attacks in Mumbai last week that left at least 172 people dead and several hundred injured.

At a condolence meeting at the India Social Centre in Abu Dhabi, community members led by India's Ambassador to the UAE Talmiz Ahmad paid homage to the victims of terror and bid an emotional farewell to the departed souls.

They pledged their strong commitment to fight terrorism, which has now become a global phenomenon. Additionally, they said that such dastardly acts of violence would not shake India's will to eliminate terrorism.

"Our country is under assault. Terror has no consideration for age or gender. For terrorists, all victims are equal, so long as they are annihilated," said Ahmad.

Ahmad and other prominent Indian community members who spoke at the condolence meeting, praised the role of the Indian armed forces and Mumbai police who engaged the terrorists, some of whose members laid down their lives in order to protect innocent men, women and children from becoming victims of terror.

India has formally accused "elements" in Pakistan of being behind the devastating militant attacks in Mumbai.

The attacks are widely seen as a "major setback" to the peace process between nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan.

Terror attack: Dubai memorial

A memorial will be held in Dubai by the Indian Community Welfare Committee under the patronage of the Consulate General of India, Dubai at the Indian High School's Shaikh Rashid Auditorium on Wednesday at 7pm. Homage will be paid to the Indian and foreign nationals who lost their lives in the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

Members of the Indian Community and well wishers of India are invited to attend. The memorial will feature patriotic songs, footage of the attacks, a speech by Indian Consul General Venu Rajamony, a two-minute silence, the national anthem and lighting of candles.
