Helping the 'movers'
You've decided on the removals company you wish to hire — your job's done. Well, not exactly. Helping the packer understand your needs and specific requirements is a great step to ensure everything goes smoothly.

A lack of communication could translate into damaged goods or a dissatisfied you, as in the case of Marcellus Fernandes, a 42-year-old Indian expatriate.
Fernandes had paid Dh 1,200 to employ the services of a reputed removals company. At the end of the move from a studio to a two-bedroom apartment, he wished there had been better communication.
He said: "I was assured that everything would be done according to my needs, but the movers were very non-cooperative. I had an option of not paying for a dissatisfactory service, but since there had been an agreement I felt obliged to do so."
He encouraged readers to insist on a written agreement and pre-set terms and conditions to avoid a similar experience.
Here are some tips:
- Organising all items helps the movers set a price after gauging the estimate cost and time required.
- Talk. Ask the movers if they won't pack something. You might want to pack something yourself or leave certain items unpacked.
- Notify the movers of any allergies or items they would need to be very careful with. Inform them of pets.
- Photographing fragile items before packing begins helps in case of loss or damage.
- When packing, match boxes with rooms they should be placed in, by using coloured stickers. Assign one area where all boxes could be placed.
- If there are any problems that could affect your move, inform the removals company in advance. Decide on a moving time and give directions to your new home.
- Inform the mover whether the goods would be taken by stairs or in an elevator. Know the size of your elevator.
- Offer the movers refreshments. A break always helps.
