Dubai: A number plate auction held yesterday made close to Dh20 million whilst the number plate with the highest bid sold for more than Dh1 million.
The car registration plate number F33333 finally sold for Dh1,130,000 at a Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Distinguished Number Plates Auction after tough bidding which attracted at least 250 bidders.
The buyer of the plate bought seven registration plates in total but wished to remain anonymous. His son, Reza, 18, an Iranian business student said he is hopeful his father will allow him to drive around with the number plate F33333 on one of his eight cars.
Wanting to buy
"It is my first time at an auction. We came to buy one registration plate but you just get carried away in there. The auction makes you want to buy," said Reza.
Registration plates up for auction were three, four and five digits with the letters D, E and F. Actual proceeds of Auction No 51 organised by the Roads and Transport Authority for selling distinguished numbers totalled Dh19,557,000; where 11 registration plates in the D, E and F with a nominal value of Dh4.7 million were sold.
The five-digit number plates of category F topped the session with the number F33333 the best seller, followed by F88888 which was sold for Dh1.30 million, F66666 for Dh1.10 million, and F44444 which fetched Dh1 million.
Engineer Ali Mohammad Al Jasem, Director of the Licensing Department at the RTA said that the purpose of the auction was to meet the wishes of a bracket of members of the public community who own distinguished numbers. RTA will organise more auctions before the end of this year.
