Ras Al Khaimah: Fish prices have shot up in the market after Cyclone Gonu hit the UAE and there is still an acute shortage of fish in the emirate, shoppers said.

Fishermen said fish have also moved to deeper waters because of the summer heat. "This crisis could continue till the middle of September," said one fisherman.

Fishermen are still not venturing far out to sea.

They said they are constantly looking for clear weather and wait for weather updates and warnings before setting sail.

A hammour weighing three to four kilos is being sold for Dh200. A one-kilo Safi was being sold for Dh40. A one-kilo She'eri fish is being priced between Dh30 to Dh 35.

A senior official at the Higher Fishing Committee said the fish markets are expected to suffer from the fish shortage for sometime.

The official added a lack of fish imports from Oman was also leading to the shortage.
