Firm helps fight malnutrition crisis

Dubai: A UAE-based company is taking steps to address a growing malnutrition crisis in the Gaza Strip.
The Gaza Strip was reported in the International Committee of the Red Cross as facing a steady rise in chronic malnutrition. The dramatic fall in living standards has triggered a shift in diet leading to alarming deficiencies in iron and vitamins A and D, stated the report.
Al Ittihad Drug Store (IDS) is addressing the crisis of child malnutrition by shipping a 20-foot container holding 10,000 tins of fortified powdered milk to Gaza from Dubai, which has been paid for by donations from local businesses and individuals.
IDS is making the shipment following media reports that cases of child malnutrition in Gaza have doubled in just one year, with other reports stating that even before the recent invasion 50,000 children in Gaza were suffering from malnutrition.
IDS has partnered with the Palestine Children's Relief Fund which will cover shipping costs and be responsible for the milk's distribution.
"The idea of child malnutrition in 2009 is unthinkable," said Dalya Hesham Tabari, Director of IDS.
Any individuals or businesses wishing to support her mission in sending the necessary milk supplement can contact her at dalya.tabari@ids.ae
