Abu Dhabi: Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Khalifa International date Palms Award, presented 10,000 palm tree shoots to all participants in the Liwa Date Festival.
Fifteen farmers were given prizes for producing the best Fard dates at the fifth edition of the festival taking place at Al Garbia (formerly known as the Western Region).
The first three winners received Nissan cars while the others got cash prizes ranging between Dh15,000 and Dh60,000 at a ceremony held on Wednesday at Liwa exhibition centre.
The 15 winners were chosen out of a total of 60 participants, mostly from the western region, though the competition is open to farmers from all over the UAE this year.
"Farmers from northern and eastern emirates will participate in the Khalas and Nokhba [types of dates] categories which are grown in their areas," Mubarak Al Qusaili Al Mansouri, head of the judging committee told Gulf News.
The Nokhba category is a mix of 10 to 15 different types of dates.
There are more than 120 types of dates registered in UAE. Fard, Bu Ma'an and Dabbas from the western region are the best quality and such varieties cannot be cultivated in other areas.
The festival, organised by Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) under the patronage of Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Minister of Presidential Affairs, aims to celebrate the date season and also highlight heritage through numerous activities taking place at Liwa.
