Dubai: The year 2010 appears to be a good year for the Toogood family's bank account as the cost of many essential food items has decreased.

Matt Toogood, a New Zealand national residing in Dubai, does most of the grocery shopping for the family and has noticed prices of essential commodities have dropped since July 2009.

Toogood, a director of a coffee company, said: "I am glad that food retailers are lowering prices as it helps a lot of people who are struggling financially."

Toogood's bill for a kilogram of tomatoes has dropped from Dh4 to Dh3 and onions from Dh8.95 to Dh6.95. However, the price of potatoes has stayed the same at Dh1.95.

"I try to buy local produce as much as possible, as it is cheaper and fresher. I would not pay more for a product that was flown in," he said. Many prices have stayed the same.

Toogood buys a two-litre bottle of milk for Dh10, which was the same price a year ago.

The cost of a loaf of the type of special white bread they buy has stayed the same at Dh8.50.

The price of cooking oil has decreased the past year from Dh20 for a two-litre bottle to Dh17. He said: "The price of cooking oil has decreased but this is due to the two-for-one deals they have been offering this year." The price tag of the five-litre can of water stayed the same since last July at Dh6.
