Sharjah: Residents expressed surprise at the decision of Sharjah Municipality to issue membership cards to residents seeking to enter residential public parks.

Most who spoke to Gulf News felt the move was unnecessary.

The municipality said yesterday that on the membership forms, residents have to inform their area of residence, in order to be eligible to use the neighbourhood parks. Municipality authorities stress that visitors from other emirates, if accompanied by the card holder, can have access to the parks.

"If you are a cardholder and want to bring guests along with you, there is no problem. The purpose of the cards is to stop labourers and visitors from disturbing others, because there have been problems in the past," said Hassan Al Balghouny, official spokesperson of Sharjah Municipality.

"I cannot believe it. Parks should be made public, and I think that everyone should be able to use the parks, regardless of where they live," said Mohammad Ali, a Sharjah resident.

"This does not solve the problem of getting unwanted attention," said Sabah Ahmad, another resident.

Effective April 15, subscription card holders will have to offer proof of being a resident in Sharjah, said Abdullah Al Ameri, Director General for Sharjah Municipality.

To apply for the free subscription cards, residents have to provide the municipality with either the tenancy contract or a copy of their location map to prove that they are residents.

Members who misuse the subscription card will face a fine of Dh500.
