Dubai: More than 300 fires have broken out in Dubai in the first five months of this year, five per cent of which were major fires, according to latest statistics from Dubai Civil Defence.
Inspection teams from Dubai Civil Defence have started the largest ever inspection campaign in the wake of major fire incidents.
Major General Rashid Thani Al Matroushi, Director of Dubai Civil Defence, on Monday said there has been a spate of massive fire accidents in Dubai in the past few months, especially at warehouses labour accommodations and factories.
"We cannot stop the fires from breaking out, but we can reduce the fire incidents by abiding by safety standards, which is the main aim of this campaign," he said.
Gulf News had earlier reported that the "Safety First" campaign began on Sunday and involved 10 inspection teams.
Major Gen Al Matroushi said latest technology is being used in locating the warehouses and factories using GPS system, as every violating establishment will be given a specific colour to make it easy for inspectors to follow up.
"The punishments during this campaign could go up to Dh50,000 after warning and then offenders will be referred to law," he said.
