Dubai: An aid campaign aiming at providing medicine and medical equipment for Palestinians in the Gaza strip was launched by the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment, on Thursday.

The campaign under the name 'For the Patients of Palestine' aims at mitigating the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza during Israel's blockage of the territory by providing medicine and medical equipment.

Israel in the last week has tightened its blockade of the Gaza strip which has been besieged since June 2007.

Ebrahim Mohammad Bu Melha, vice chairman of the board of trustees of the establishment, said, at the press conference announcing the launch of the campaign, that the establishment has donated Dh10 million to kick-start the charity campaign.

"Our brothers in Palestine are going through harsh times and they suffer from shortages in every aspect of life, most critical is the medical situation where a lack of medicine is threatening the very existence of ill people," said Bu Melha adding that providing medicine for hospitals in Gaza is crucial at this stage.

Intensified efforts

The Red Crescent Authority intensified its efforts to extend aid to the people of Gaza, affected by the Israeli siege.

Khairi Naji Al Aridi, the Palestinian Ambassador to the UAE emphasised the importance of the UAE stand, led by President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in supporting humanitarian issues in Palestine.

Al Aridi also said during his visit to the RCA headquarters yesterday that all efforts and initiatives taken by the UAE are greatly appreciated by the Palestinian leadership and people.
